Job Opportunity for a General Manager at Ahazaza School

Muhanga District, South Province, Rwanda

The mission of the AHAZAZA Independent School is to educate able and motivated children to become Rwanda’s future leaders. It acts as a kind of social entrepreneur aiming to favour the country’s development and to generate long-term social development.

AHAZAZA Independent School was established through the initiative of a small group of residents of Muhanga in October 2005, to provide quality education to children in a rural area. The school which , started operating in January 2006, now has close to 479 students divided into 20classes.


The philosophy of the school is based on humanistic values that respect each individual by refusing any kind of dogmatism or hierarchy of cultures or religions. The courses taught at AHAZAZA Independent School aim at contributing to the building of a society that protects freedom, favours initiative and develops a sense of responsibility with a particular emphasis on the full and unconditional respect of freedom of thought.


Ahazaza School is seeking to hire a full time General Manager to lead and manage all aspects of the organization, including overseeing educational goals, engaging the community, managing financial and fundraising affairs, and supporting the board of directors. The individual will use his/her strong leadership and pedagocical skills, financial management skills, and fundraising skills to support the operations of the organization. Applicants for this position will be self-motivated individuals with a high degree of initiative and professionalism.


Key Accountabilities will be:

  • Design, implement, and maintain policies for the School within the respect of its objectives and philosophy.

  • Identify, recruit, and manage teaching staff, administrative staff, and maintenance staff.

  • Oversee the implementation of the National and Cambridge curricula within the respect of Ahazaza School pedagogy.

  • Support teachers to attain all educational targets and outcomes establishing and promoting participative decisions making

  • Manage all operational aspects including maintaining operational standards of the Ahazaza School and Hall in a cost effective manner.

  • Coordinate with all vendors and contractors as it relates to all building maintenance, repairs, and construction projects

  • Support fundraising by nurturing individual, corporate, and foundation donor relationships

  • Develop relationships with community stakeholders and international partners

  • Build community presence through relationships with media, elected officials, and government partners

  • Support the administration and operations of the board of directors of the Ahazaza NGO

  • Maintain inventory control and work with the person responsible for it to maintain appropriate stock levels for the school

  • Work with the accountant and the financial officer in preparing operational budgets and controlling spending throughout the year

  • Participate in school initiatives, meetings and support the marketing of the school Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years’ management/ supervisory experience in an NGO environment

  • Work experience in the Education sector, possibly in Rwanda, as a school leader for at least 2 years

  • Bachelors Degree in Education

  • Post Graduate Training in Educational Administration.

  • Curriculum Development, Entrepreneurship, Accounting. Economics, Business Management or a related field

In particular :

  • Strong organizational, and time management skills

  • Experience providing training, feedback, and motivating employees

  • Experience nurturing donor relationships

  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written communications in English. French, and Kinyarwanda speaking is an added.

  • Experience in public speaking, influencing and building relationships.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Ability to work under pressure with strong problem solving skills
